THX
THX is the patent name given to a distortion-free sound reproduction system created mainly for movie theatres, screening rooms and high-definition home theatre systems. It is also incorporated in computer speakers, gaming consoles and car audio systems. The technology was developed by Tomlinson Holman in 1992 at George Lucas's company, Lucasfilms. This technology was specially developed for George Lucas’s third Star Wars movie – ‘Return of the Jedi’. The technology was developed for accurate reproduction of the sound effects in the movie. THX is a quality assurance system, which supports various formats like digital (Dolby Digital, SDDS) or analog (Dolby SR, Ultra-Stereo).THX is the trade name of a high-fidelity sound reproduction standard for movie theaters, screening rooms, home theaters, computer speakers, gaming consoles, and car audio systems. THX stands for Tomlinson Holman's eXperiment. THX was developed by Tomlinson Holman at George Lucas's company Lucasfilm in 1982 to ensure that the soundtrack for the third Star Wars film, Return of the Jedi, would be accurately reproduced in the best venues. THX sound is like a quality standard proposed by Lucas Film for the optimal playback system of sound effects in either the film studio or the dubbing studio and the theatre. In other words, with this system the sound effects devised by a filmmaker can be played back in any theatre with a certain consistent level of quality maintained.
THX is the standard for the sound effects, not for the soundtrack formats as with Dolby Digital and DTS. Therefore, the two standards can be used simultaneously. If THX films recorded using Dolby Digital or DTS are played back with a Dolby Digital or DTS amp that is uses the THX system, the result is even better sound effects. A THX trailer consists of stunning audio and visual effects, with each trailer taking on its own personality. When THX was founded, the company was looking for a truly unique sound effect. A sound that would test the frequency and dynamic range of a theater's acoustics and surround sound system, while also letting the audience realize that they weren't in just any typical movie theater. THX Certified Receivers are the centerpiece for great home audio systems. THX certification ensures that receivers can truly unlock the power of surround sound and deliver crystal clear movie, music and game experiences to your home theater or media room. By definition, a receiver is the combination of a pre-amplifier and a power amplifier. The THX engineering team collaborates with manufacturers to incorporate the THX standards and technologies in the products. Certified products like THX speakers, THX amplifiers, THX AV Receiver, THX amplifiers, THX speakers, etc. are considered to be of the best quality. The company also provides certification for consumer products like HD projectors, LCDs, plasmas and DVRs.
